Medical Society reinstated in Parker County

Doctors look forward to working with community, each other

— Thirty doctors gathered together at The Wild Mushroom Wednesday night for camaraderie and a presentation from the Texas Medical Association.

The presentation from the Texas Medical Association brought doctors up to speed with the national health care reform.

“There are so many changes with the reform bill we need to stay informed,” Dr. Michael Houck, a radiologist, said. “It is good for us to be informed about what is going on and the changes in medicine.”

But the meeting had another objective too. The doctors, and nearly a dozen others in the medical profession, are part of the Parker County Medical Society.

Wednesday’s meeting was the second time the society met, the first meeting was in August. The group elected officials to lead the society in its mission, which includes fellowship with others in the medical field and outreach to the community.

Dr. Sanjeeb Shrestha, a gastroenterologist, was elected president and said he is excited about moving forward with the society.

“We have had a Parker County Medical Society for about 30 years, but it’s remained dormant,” Shrestha said. “And now that more physicians have moved into the community, I wanted to reactivate the society because we need some of vehicle where we can all have good quality meetings locally. And also a place where doctors can get together in a non-medical setting.”

Shrestha is already setting goals for the society.

“My goal for this is to have a cohesive medical society — we are all getting together for a common purpose,” he said.

The society also plans to get involved in community outreach, including a free health fair in 2012. Shrestha said he hopes to include cholesterol and cardiac screenings at the health fair.

But the Parker County community isn’t the only one the medical society is reaching out to.

Shrestha said doctors from surrounding communities, like Palo Pinto, have also been attending meeting because there is not a gathering place for doctors in their own community. He also plans to work with doctors in the Stephenville area.

Other officers elected included Houck as vice president, Dr. Nursat Khan, who specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics, as treasurer and Karen Brierton as executive secretary.

“I think there is a big need for all of us and we’ve all been talking about this for a while,” Houck, who has been practicing in Weatherford for nearly three years, said. “I think the way Parker County is growing it is a good idea to get this started — it can only help us to take care of the people in Parker County and fellowship together.”

Houck said Weatherford Regional Medical Center has been very supportive of the medical society and that as the hospital grows it only makes sense for the doctors to work together for a common cause.

“I’m really excited that we’re getting this active and hope to have many programs next year,” Shrestha said.
