Special to the Democrat
Are you looking for a unique way to be Santa this holiday season? Donate items to the Fort Worth Zoo’s Holiday Animal Toy Drive on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. Zoo friends are invited to donate toys such as balls, bird feeders, rakes and shovels to the zoo’s animals.
A fun holiday event for the entire family, the zoo’s toy drive will feature a visit from Santa, holiday face painting, Fort Worth Zoo animals and more.
The animals themselves love Santa, of course, but the toys needed are actually enrichment items that enhance animal exhibits and encourage natural foraging behaviors. The zoo is also accepting donations of animal keeper tools such as shovels, rakes and buckets.
Children ages 3-12 receive half-price admission to the zoo with the purchase of regular adult admission when they donate an item to the toy drive. Donors are asked to only donate Fort Worth Zoo-approved items listed on the zoo’s Web site or available from The Home Depot’s online and in-store gift registry.
For more information, visit www.fortworthzoo.org or call (817) 759-7360.

Texas, underground
The Natural Bridge Caverns take “deep in the heart of Texas Hill Country” to a whole new meaning. With depths reaching 260 feet underground, it is Texas’ largest-known cavern and consistently ranks as one of the state’s top tourist destinations. Discovered in 1960 by students at St. Mary’s University, the cavern, located just west of New Braunfels, has delighted visitors for decades with lantern-led tours, archaeological gems, and natural formations like “soda straw” stalactites occurring along hidden passages.
