Killing time while dining out ... I visited the Chicken Scratch Bistro the other day and was pleasantly surprised. This new cafe opened up on the square in one of the buildings formerly occupied by the theater. They did a remarkable job of renovating the building and making it pleasingly warm and inviting.
The menu consists of soups, salads and sandwiches made to order. The service was outstanding and the food arrived hot and tasty. The owner/manager came to the table to make sure we had been served in a timely fashion and that our order was prepared as we had ordered. I must say personal service does go a long way in making sure the customer is satisfied and any complaints or word of praise are well received.
One of the great things about new businesses opening in town is the extra things they offer to tempt new customers. The Chicken Scratch offers wireless Internet so you can surf the Web or do a little extra work as you enjoy your meal or one of their fine coffees, lattes or fresh teas. The Bistro has plenty of room for you to stretch out and enjoy your beverage in an atmosphere that is relaxing and inviting.
I am sure with the construction around the square, there might be some difficulty getting there. Let me encourage you to make the effort, especially as you might need a break from your shopping. You will find the food is served hot and the service is warm and friendly.
Remember during these last days before Christmas there are other options for taking a break besides those out at the Interstate. Come downtown and see what is going on around the square. There are several places to eat and the shops along York Avenue have a large selection of gift ideas.
When you grow tired of the traffic jam around the southside, before you get hot under the collar, Try a trip to the square. You might not have to like it quite so busy and hott.

Texas, underground
The Natural Bridge Caverns take “deep in the heart of Texas Hill Country” to a whole new meaning. With depths reaching 260 feet underground, it is Texas’ largest-known cavern and consistently ranks as one of the state’s top tourist destinations. Discovered in 1960 by students at St. Mary’s University, the cavern, located just west of New Braunfels, has delighted visitors for decades with lantern-led tours, archaeological gems, and natural formations like “soda straw” stalactites occurring along hidden passages.
