Exchange students need host families

WEATHERFORD — WEATHERFORD — STS Foundation, a local non-profit exchange program, is bringing a group of foreign exchange students to the United States for the upcoming school year and is seeking Weatherford families to host students for five or 10 months.

The teenagers come from more than 30 countries, and families can choose from any country. They have their own spending money and insurance. These students want to share their culture and customs with local families and the community.

Here are a couple of those students:

• Kaja comes from an island called Arendal in southern Norway. There she lives with her parents. Kaja loves animals and owns two cats. She loves going to the local ballet center where she practices jazz, ballet and contemporary dance five hours a week. She also loves theater, reading, travelling and hanging out with friends. Kaja has dreamed of being an exchange student since eighth grade and is thrilled that her dream is finally coming true.

• Eero is from Finland where he lives with his parents and 17-year-old twin sister. They also have a dog they love very much. Eero enjoys ice hockey and soccer. He speaks both Swedish and German. He likes to cook for his family or use the barbecue grill. He is ready for the challenge of being an exchange student. His teachers describe him as friendly and open-minded and feel he will be an excellent exchange student.

Texas, underground
The Natural Bridge Caverns take “deep in the heart of Texas Hill Country” to a whole new meaning. With depths reaching 260 feet underground, it is Texas’ largest-known cavern and consistently ranks as one of the state’s top tourist destinations. Discovered in 1960 by students at St. Mary’s University, the cavern, located just west of New Braunfels, has delighted visitors for decades with lantern-led tours, archaeological gems, and natural formations like “soda straw” stalactites occurring along hidden passages.
