The Golden Moon still shines

WEATHERFORD — By Janis Saunders

Jim and I are alike in many ways and also different. Jim craves chocolate about every six months and if he doesn’t get it, well ... he gets rather testy. It doesn’t make any difference what kind of chocolate and how it is fixed, he craves it. Same way with barbecue and Chinese food for me.

I crave Orange Chicken and I know just where to get it. The Golden Moon has been dishing out premium Chinese and Thai food since 1984. Don Westmoreland, the manager, said it was raining the day they opened and it rained nearly every day for a week after. It’s hard to believe they have been in Weatherford 26 years.

During all those years they have served some of he best Chinese and Thai food you can find. I believe their Egg Drop Soup should be classified as medicinal as well as just plain good. Many times Jim has stopped by and ordered two servings of their soup and brought it home for us when we felt under the weather. It is good for what ails you!

Last week we stopped by and it was a pleasure to walk in. It was nice and quiet even though almost all the tables were occupied.

This time Jim ordered the Orange Chicken and I got something different. I ordered the Combo A, which contains sweet and sour pork, Almond Kai Ding (chicken and Chinese vegetables in sauce) egg roll, barbecue rib, fried shrimp and rice. It comes with Rumaki, which is chicken livers and other stuff. I asked for a substitution and another fried shrimp was added. This was a lot of food and it was all simply delicious.

Emma, our server, kept our tea glasses full, but she did it in such a way that our conversation and eating was not disturbed. Dining at the Golden Moon is such a pleasure. Everyone working there knows their job and they do it well.

No matter what day you go there you will run into regulars who have been dining at the Golden Moon for years. They certainly have a loyal fan base. Their food is spiced up with peppers, mint, many kinds of herbs and wonderful sauces. I can guarantee you will not go away hungry. The servings are generous and the prices moderate. We have taken our grandsons there and friends and they have all been pleased with their food.

There was a time when people in Weatherford had to do without the Golden Moon food. In 1997, there was a fire and the restaurant had to be rebuilt. When they opened again, the regulars flocked in to get their fix of Chinese and Thai food.

Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and they have 35 items on the lunch menu. The cost for these 35 items is only $8.25. Golden Moon will deliver food to your office or front door. There is a $2 charge for 1 to 5 miles square and $5 for over 5 to 7 miles. It will be packaged to keep your food hot and ready to eat. If you have it delivered to your home you can kick back in your recliner, turn on the TV to some interesting show and fill up with delicious Chinese food. Sounds like a plan to me. They have to-go menus available at the front desk. Dinner is served from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Friday and Saturday the hours are 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. They are closed Mondays.

The Golden Moon is located at 1410 S. Main St. and their phone number is (817) 594-1692.

Don Westmoreland and the friendly staff will make sure your dining experience is a pleasant one.
