Don Marcos is new to Weatherford

Janis Saunders, Democrat Food Critic

I received an e-mail from one of my readers telling me about a new Mexican restaurant on South Main. It’s right next to Pasta Fina and has not had a chance to put up a sign with their name, Don Marcos, on it as yet. They have been open two weeks and they are still trying to get everything in line.

Cesar Garcia, the owner, is not new to the restaurant business. He previously had a restaurant in Mineral Wells and decided that Weatherford is “where it’s at” so to speak.

The day we stopped by was one of those days when it looked like it was going to rain bullfrogs, but never did. Jim had picked me up after one of my meetings and I told him I wasn’t in the mood to cook lunch. As we were going down South Main, I saw the restaurant and hollered for him to turn in. Of course he passed it up and we had to go down a block, turn around and then make our way to the parking lot.

As we entered the restaurant we were greeted by a young woman who was all smiles. She told us to come right on in and take a seat. She asked us for our drink order and put two menus on the table. Then the fun began.

I always want to look at the whole menu before I make up my mind and this takes time. However, this time I made up my mind before Jim. I had not had flautas in a long time, so I chose the beef fajita meat flautas. I could have had ground meat or chicken, but the beef sounded good. Jim finally made up his mind, and guess what he finally ordered? Beef enchiladas!

My flautas had beans, rice and guacamole along with cheese sauce on the flautas. They arrived hot, crisp and chock full of beef. Jim’s enchiladas were stuffed with meat and had cheese sauce on top, which is a bit of a change.

We had introduced ourselves to the owner, Cesar, and his sister, Sandra. We began taking photos and Jim took one of Sandra with a big smile on her face as she held our food. By the time we got through taking photos, our food had cooled down. Sandra quickly picked up our plates and took off to get us some hot food. I told her we were used to eating “cool” food when Jim was taking photos, but she insisted on us eating some hot enchiladas and flautas.

I must admit, my flautas tasted better hot than they would have if they were cool. They were so crisp and since they were served with cheese sauce, guacamole, green sauce and salsa, I had my choice, but ended up trying all of them.

The salsa was excellent, but the chips were kind of chewy. Sandra apologized saying they were in the midst of choosing between thin, crispy or thicker chips. I told Sandra I preferred the thin, crispy chips and she agreed with me. So, the next time we eat there I bet they’ll have thin chips to dip into the tangy salsa.

Jim enjoyed his enchiladas and thought the cheese sauce on top was pretty good.

For the present, they are open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday they are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The restaurant was clean and bright inside. You can also call in your order for pick up. Their phone number is (817) 594-5208. Be sure and pick up a “to go” menu so you will have one handy when the “Mexican food munchies hits you.

We have seen several restaurants fade from the scene lately. Jorge’s, Coronado’s and now Dixie House bit the dust. If you have a favorite place to eat, patronize them when you can so they can stick around the Weatherford scene. I want to have many choices of places to eat. I remember when we moved here 21 years ago, there were only five or six to choose from and some of those weren’t what I would call top choice restaurants.

We’ll go back to eat at Don Marcos and when we do, I think I’ll try the chimichanga or the carne asada. They also have something called a chimichanga cheese cake that sounds heavenly. I forgot to mention the shrimp dishes they serve. They also sound good.

See what I mean? It’s hard to make a choice!
