Don’t call me a drunk
Dear editor,
I suppose I cannot argue with Mr. Clifford Ball’s assertion that “liberal left wingers” are for the most part in favor of gun control.
I suppose I cannot argue with Mr. Ball’s assertion that there are more drinkers than shooters among his liberal friends.
I do, however, take issue with his conclusion that we “left wingers” are all drunks, are not sufficiently outraged by a DUI death, and are responsible for the spread of more and more permissive liquor control laws.
If this were true, how would you explain voters in the City of Weatherford casting their ballots in favor of legalizing the sale of liquor in stores and restaurants? There are not enough “liberal left wingers” in Weatherford to ruffle a feather on the conservative head of Weatherford’s political power if we all got together and blew on it at the same time.
The force behind the passage of these new liquor laws was increased commerce, plain and simple. The arguments were that it would bring in tax revenue, bigger and better chain restaurants and stimulate local economy. These are typically not “liberal left wing” issues.
Please do not demonize me or call me a drunk because my politics may be different than yours.
Kathleen A Lee,
Weatherford
Use of recycle bins at library
Dear editor,
There was an article in the Democrat a couple of weeks ago about curbside recycling for city residents. In that article, it was stated that county residents use the recycle bins at the library to dump their household garbage. The article did not say some county residents.
How did the person that was quoted know it was county residents? It could have been city residents that missed putting their trash out on collection day.
I am a county resident and I have never put my household garbage in a recycle bin anywhere. As a person trying to recycle as much as possible, I have used the bins at the library often and hope they are not removed. They do get very full over the weekend, so I have learned not to go there on Sunday or early Monday. I do not like to have to put my discards on the ground because the bins are full.
It was also stated in the article the county residents should take their things to the precinct barns. Are there recycle bins there or just trash bins? I for one had no idea there were recycle bins at the precinct barns. And I thought the only time we could take trash to the precinct barns was on county cleanup day.
Please do not remove the recycle bins from the library because they are very convenient when I visit the library. Also, there is not a precinct barn as close to me as the library.

Retirement of WC president
Dear editor,
No one should have been surprised with the announced retirement of Dr. Joe Birmingham since the four new board members campaign against the president.
I would suspect that he is the first of a number of faculty and staff that will retire or leave.
Weatherford College appears to be joining a long list of other community colleges that will be going through a period of instability.
There is nothing wrong with change if it needs to be done (and WC needs some changes), but changing just to be changing is not good and I believe the new board members had made it quite clear that they want change for change sake.

A new American manifesto?
Dear editor,
If the administration has its way — with support from the state-run media — we will soon be addressing each other as Comrade! Polling places will no longer be used for voting, but a place to hand out little red Obamanation handbooks to study while we are shuffled off for indoctrination at state-run collective farms! The propaganda will be memorized — or else!
Surely anyone with a hint of common sense now has some buyer’s remorse over the last presidential election? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how our lives are being affected by the government that is supposed to serve us.
But as stated in the famous writings of Karl Marx, Lenin and Mao, we need to be serving the government — you know the saying “All for one and all for the government.”
At every turn our freedoms are being slowly, but surely stripped away. The second amendment is under constant attack; that has to be the first one to go because instituting tyranny is easier when the population is unarmed!
How about the new Value Added Taxes (VATs), proposed to pay for more socialist programs i.e. health care. Comrades, please listen to me. There is NO successful model for government-run healthcare! The Brits and Canadians have citizens dying on treatment waiting lists; is that what you want for this country?
In fear of restating the obvious for most of you — conservatives get it — but blunt force trauma is needed on liberals.
I’ll close on a personal note. I care about my beloved country; I served her honorably for 24 years; she provided my children a college education (notice I said educated, not indoctrinated), a good job and home. All of the things Americans cherish and work hard to achieve!
When my new grandson reaches the age of reasoning, what will be waiting on him?
Lon Williams,
Weatherford

Talking and driving dangerous, even hands-free
Dear editor,
After reading the Sept. 18 editorial, “Speed limit goes up; safety goes down” by Margarita Venegas, I am afraid I must take exception to one of her comments. I will not enter into the argument concerning the safety of raising the speed limit to 85 mph, however, the comment quoted below concerns me a great deal because it is shared by many others including a few state legislators. -
Thanks for administering flu shot clinics

New jobs bill just old trick
Dear editor,
This new jobs bill or what is now commonly known as the “son of stimulus” is nothing but a repackaged version of the first waste of money! - More Letters to the Editor Headlines
