Letters to the editor, Oct. 25, 2009

What are you thinking?

Dear editor,

I am concerned about the proposed Legacy Center that some of the Weatherford Council members want to bring to Fort Worth Highway in Weatherford. Didn’t we just cut the production of a city park due to the economy? Didn’t we just scrap the recycling bins, a needed service at the library because curbside was cheaper? Yet you spent $85,000 of our hotel motel tax money on a feasibility study for an civic and convention center?

What are you guys thinking?

Why do you think we need more people attracted to Weatherford? Have you tried to drive through the city lately? Do we really need horse trailers and people from all over the country crowding up Fort Worth Highway, tearing up our infrastructure? And why are you concerned about a place for sporting events, meetings and performing arts, theatre and symphonies?

We have the college theatre, new high school auditorium, college ball fields, new city ball fields at Holland Lake, the Doss Center, which already receives subsidies from hotel motel tax for meetings, the Church of God state convention center and campgrounds, and a newly-renovated stadium at the Ninth Grade Center for graduations and concerts.

Stop! We have enough.

It is time for America to stop thinking that uncontrolled growth is progress. It is not. Progress is improvement, not more congestion. Stop filling up every conceivable space you find. I want to be able to drive through the city. I want to get to the freeway. It would be different if we really needed this. But we don’t. Come back to using your elected position as a responsibility and putting the needs of the people who elected you first. Support projects that are best for the common good, not special interest.

The Constitution is fading away

Dear editor,

I just printed the Constitution of the United States from the National Archives Web site. It is eight pages long, and this portion doesn’t include the amendments.

Article One Section 8 gives the Federal Government, less than one page long, its powers in this Republic. There are 17 of them. In these 17 powers, there are things Congress isn’t doing, while it is doing things that aren’t listed as a power that they have.

Section 9 lists the powers the Federal Government is explicitly prohibited from doing. Section 10 sets the limits on the States. And this is where the 10th amendment comes into play. See it below.

Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

The Constitution doesn’t prohibit the states or the people the power to run education and health care. The Constitution doesn’t give the Federal Government the right to bail out industries, banks or car manufacturers. I think you get the picture.

Congress is not serving its duties under the Constitution of the United States. This information can be found at www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters.

May I suggest that everyone call, write and e-mail their representatives. Ours in Parker County is Kay Granger in the House of Representatives, John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchinson in the United States Senate.

This Republic depends on the adherence to the Constitution, and the Congress of the United States is giving aid to its fading away.

Micky Baker,

Freedom of speech

Dear editor,

Once again, we are expressing our constitutional rights of freedom of speech found in the U.S. Constitution, even though the liberal left socialists may not want us to.

Abraham Lincoln — who President Obama is quite fond of — said, “whereas, the Senate of the U.S. devoutly recognizing the supreme authority and just government of Almighty God in the affairs of men and nations, has by a resolution requested the president to designate and set apart a day for national prayer and humiliation: and whereas, it is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the power of God, TO CONFESS THEIR SINS AND TRANSGRESSIONS in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history: — that those nations only are blessed WHOSE GOD IS THE LORD.”

My, my, how things have changed. There are no politicians in today’s day and age who can say that with being politically incorrect and may “offend’ someone, or that the liberal left socialists may call for jihad.

We are Americans, Christians, voters and tax payers. I am a veteran. This does not make us terrorists as the chief of Homeland Security says we are.

Imagine, a year ago we did not have to make a statement like this.

Today’s generation of Americans, for the most part, do not know anything about the U.S. Constitution, and half prefer socialism. It would be nice if this generation of Americans had the same intestinal fortitude the founders of this great nation had. (Acts 4:12 - KN).

What are we waiting for?

Dear editor,

‘I truly enjoyed the letter from Richard Fueilly, (Oct. 18). How true every word is.

Michael Moore IS trashing the very system which has allowed him to make millions. Maybe he will share his wealth!?

What a joke Al Gore is. And why are our children allowed to watch this error-filled movie, “Inconvenient Truth?” Why are children shown lies instead of the truth.

The truth — they are not allowed to be taught about God, not even a Bible in the schools. Why aren’t parents enraged about this? Only God can control the climate. Only God can destroy the earth in his time. Rev. 21:6, God says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.”

Amen to Barbara Pickard of Aledo, (Oct. 18), she is right. Obama is against everything God is for. I will not vote for any candidate that is for moral declination of our nation.

Note that during the ‘60s when prayer was taken out of school, this nation’s moral standards have decreased, families have decreased and divorces have increased. Going against God’s teachings will bring our nation down.

Now we have a president who promotes abortion, same-sex marriage and homosexuality. He wants to control our lives, our families, now even our health care. What does the government know about health?

11 Chronicles 7 verse 14 says: “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.”

We as a people and Christians can turn this nation around by simply doing as 11 Chronicles says. People, what are we waiting for. That is all God is waiting for.

The death penalty

Dear editor,

I see where the ignorant death penalty opponents are at it again, or rather, still at it.

The case of Cameron Willingham (who was executed in 2004) is being brought up again for some idiotic reason. His own sister- and brother-in-law stated that he admitted to them years ago he set the fire that “executed” his own three children simply because he didn’t want his then wife to leave him.

Think about it this way: If he, or anyone had burned your three children to death, how would you feel about you personally (as a tax payer) providing him with free room and board for the remainder of his evil life? Having eaten in prison cafeterias, I can guarantee they eat better and more nutritionally than I eat, as well as probably many of you. And they are provided with MUCH better health care than we are, and that’s 24 hours a day at their convenience (and it’s free!).

That means you, your spouse, your remaining children and possibly their children, along with all your now deceased children’s other relatives would be footing his bills (along with many more criminals like him) for many years to come.

Why should you, or any of us legal tax payers have to provide those services for murders, rapists, or for that matter, habitual druggies and plain mean individuals who choose to simply ignore the laws and decent behavior dictated by our society?

Thank you City of Hudson Oaks

Dear editor,

Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, the second Miles 4 Mammograms 5K Run took place at City of Hudson Oaks City Hall. Once again, the event was a huge success because of the employees, administration, police, public works and the mayor of Hudson Oaks. They opened their city and welcomed all of Parker County for a great cause.

They began helping prepare for race day a year ago and worked diligently to ensure the safety of the race route, to notifying residents of road closure, working overtime volunteering the day of the run, and making sure things went smoothly — everyone felt welcomed.

To City Administrator Sheri Campbell-Husband, Patrick Lawler, Mayor Pat Deen, Police Chief Brandon Mayberry, Jeanette Edwards and all the employees of the City of Hudson Oaks, a big THANK YOU! Your generosity and hard work has enabled us to continue to help the women and men of Parker County.

Thank you to all the individuals and businesses that turned out to run, walk and support.

Early detection is the best protection, and because of your support everyone who needs this annual health screening will have the opportunity!

Marketing/Community Projects,

Parker County Hospital District

Change this situation

Dear editor,

Support the single payer option because it will save money for United States citizens who get a really bad deal on health care when compared to citizens of many other countries.

Each year, we United States citizens pay ever increasing insurance premiums for ever decreasing insurance coverage. Many people die because they can’t afford insurance and, being uninsured, seek medical care too late when they are much sicker.

Sicker people are generally more expensive to take care, raising the expense for every one. Only the insurance companies and medical community profits. This situation is unconscionable!

Work and vote to change this situation if you want to win office the next time you run for office.

No lessees here

Dear editor,

The “Lake lots may be sold” article, Monday’s lead story in the Democrat, needs to be corrected.

Lake lot holders are not and have never been LESSEES. As a lake LICENSE holder, I will support the idea that I might become a lake lot OWNER.

Those of us who now have lake lot agreements with the city, as licensees, have almost no meaningful property rights.

A lake lot LEASE would be quite a step up for us, but that idea has never been seriously considered in the past by the City of Weatherford.

Many license holders have invested substantially, with their money and hard work, in homes and lot improvements at the lake, which directly benefit the city. Those of us who now want to become property OWNERS should be given that opportunity.

Mac Smith,

Weatherford
