ESD No. 7 fire station unveiled

WEATHERFORD — Greenwood community members had a welcome home of sorts Saturday afternoon.

Greenwood Rural Volunteer Fire Department and Parker County Emergency Services District 7 members welcomed the community into the new fire station and community center during the department’s annual BBQ. ESD President Johnie Herbert called the 9.300 square foot facility “the fire station that’s a model home.”

During a brief ribbon cutting ceremony, Herbert wished to thank all those who were involved in the project, including the board, made up of of three engineers and two educators.

In her invocation, Department Chaplain Nancy Burgoyne thanked the community for approving the ESD and hoped the district would be able to meet the community’s needs.

State Rep. Phil King said the professionalism that the district and VFD work with isn’t seen everywhere.

“The way the ESD and fire department work together is something for all of Parker County to be proud of,” he said.

Recent wildfires have made the staffing of small rural departments very important. Parker County Judge Mark Riley, who, along with the Commissioners Court, appointed the board, said the volunteers of Parker County fire departments stand ready to help not only their communities but those outside as well.

“When Palo Pinto County was having their wildfires this summer, my phone was ringing with firefighters asking if they were needed,” Riley said. “Our volunteers deserve a pat on the back for all they do.”

The facility includes living quarters for the firemen and space for use for community events, which is something the district wanted when construction was started. A number of donations have truly made the facility very homey.

There are still things that are needed to truly fill out the station, which will come in time thanks to a strong community, Herbert concluded.
