As part of the Roo Stadium renovations, the WISD School Board approved the purchase of three lots near the Weatherford Ninth Grade Center Tuesday.
The board has long planned on purchasing the lots on 114 and 118 Eureka Street. The district now owns the entire block, and the board plans on using the new lots for additional parking around the stadium.
The third lot, on 922 South Elm Street, was not in the original proposal because it only recently became available. Currently the lot contains a fenced home, but the city has zoned it for commercial use, which concerned Superintendant Deborah Cron.
“As we know about students, they like to roam,” Cron told other board members during Tuesday’s meeting. The Elm Street lot is located across the street from the Ninth Grade Center.
Cron emphasized that the Elm Street lot was not needed for Roo Stadium renovations, as the other lots were, but noted that it could be used for additional parking for school busses.
All three lots have homes built on them, and the board has not decided yet what it will do with those homes. The homes may be sold and moved to other locations, or they may be demolished.
The board also discussed measures that could change how WISD does business.
Debbie Hummel, WISD director of purchasing, cautiously recommended adopting the JPMorgan Chase Procurement and Corporate Travel Cards.
Hummel said the district’s goal was to “establish a more efficient and cost effective method of purchasing and paying for small dollar transactions, as well as high volume, repetitive purchases.”
The JPMorgan Chase cards pays cash back on purchases, and Hummel explained that if it was used only to pay the district’s bills to its top ten vendors, WISD would earn over $40,000 back. The card is tax exempt and has several safety controls to prevent cardholders from abusing the card. Only five people currently have access to WISD credit cards.
Over 80 vendors already accept the card, and Hummel proposed a long, gradual trial period with many evaluations to test the success of the new cards in the district. The JPMorgan Chase cards were approved.

Wildlife volunteers needed
Like any other mother, Donna Robinson has pictures of her “babies” on her phone.
“Let me show you,” she said eagerly. “I’ve got lots of pictures of the kids.”
She scrolls through the photos — there’s one of a squirrel with milk on its mouth after a feeding. Oh, there’s a cute one of two tiny possums looking over her shoulder as she feeds another “baby.” Aww, there’s the group of four raccoons named after the Beatles: Ringo, Paul, George and John.
Ok. She’s not your “ordinary” mom. -
Water woes on floodplain in Weatherford
When Wendy Walling purchased her home in the Briarwood subdivision off of Sante Fe Drive in the mid-1990s, her son could easily jump from one side of the small creek behind the home to the other.
“My son was in fourth grade (when we moved in) and he could actually jump across the creek,” Walling said.
By 2007, however, Walling said the width of the creek had begun to expand.
“(The creek) can hold water now and before it never could,” Walling said. - DPS: Motorcyclists didn't see slowing truck

Weatherford junior to perform with All-State choir
When she was a little girl, Cassandra Kirby used to climb up next to her grandmother’s big fireplace and sing songs during the holiday get-togethers.
While she has a reserved and polite personality, recalling these memories makes a big smile break out onto Kirby’s face.
Get her talking about songs and suddenly she’s effusive and happy. -
