AUSTIN —Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced the state collected $1.8 billion in sales tax revenue in May, a 4.7 percent increase over May 2007.
“For the first nine months of fiscal 2008, state sales tax collections are up 5.8 percent over the same period in fiscal 2007,” Combs said. “While increases are smaller than in 2006 and 2007, growth in state sales tax revenues continues at a healthy rate.”
Parker County, as a whole, is running ahead of the state’s pace. Combined checks to municipalities in the county totals more than $1.07 million for June, a jump of 5.47 percent over the same time last year.
For 2008, county cities are more than 7 percent ahead of 2007, taking in more than $7 million.
Weatherford received a tax rebate of almost $659,000, nearly 4 percent over last June. For the year, however, the county seat has received about $4.3 million, up almost 7 percent.
Willow Park and Hudson Oaks are both enjoying growth at a rate of about twice the state’s average.
A check for $44,000 came to Willow Park’s mailbox, compared to June 2007’s $39,000. For the year, Willow Park is showing growth of more than 19 percent.
Hudson Oaks, for the year, has received $691,000 in sales tax revenue, including June’s $107,000 rebate, more than 12 percent ahead of 2007’s year-to-date total.
Things are not coming up roses all across the county. Springtown’s June check for $63,000 was $5,000 less than the same month a year ago. For the year, Springtown’s sales tax collections are down 7.52 percent.
Combs sent cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $459 million in June local sales tax allocations, up 9.3 percent compared to June 2007.
Combs sent June sales tax allocations of $306.3 million to Texas cities, up 8 percent compared to June 2007. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 5.4 percent compared to the same time period last year.
Texas counties received sales tax payments of $28.4 million, up 13.2 percent compared to last June. So far this year, sales tax allocations to counties are up 6.4 percent compared to 2007.
In addition, $17.3 million went to 135 special purpose taxing districts around the state, up 21.3 percent compared to last June. Ten local transit systems received $106.9 million in sales tax allocations, up 10.2 percent compared to a year ago.
State sales tax collections in May and local sales tax allocations in June represent sales that occurred in April and were reported to the Comptroller in May.
For details of June sales tax payments to individual cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts, locate the Monthly Sales Tax Allocation Comparison Summary Reports on the Comptroller’s Web site at www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/allocsum/compsum.html.

Sheriff, judge at odds over mailer
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler sent out a statement and automatic phone calls across the county Wednesday saying he did not endorse incumbent 43rd District Judge candidate Trey Loftin, following a mailer sent by the judge’s campaign that included a quote from Fowler.
However, Loftin said Thursday Fowler made the referenced statement to a room full of people at a fundraiser for Loftin and agreed to let Loftin’s campaign quote the sheriff. - Film director looking for local actors
