WILLOW PARK — Honors abound for the Willow Park Fire/Rescue Department.
Two if its firefighters have been awarded the American Heart Association’s Heart Saver Award.
In addition, the Insurance Services Office recently announced the department’s district has received an improved Public Protection Classification. Most insurers use the Public Protection Classification for underwriting and calculating fire insurance premiums for residential, commercial and industrial properties.
The new grading could result in substantial savings to area homeowners and businesses with respect to fire insurance.
“I am very proud of Willow Park’s accomplishment and wished to commend the volunteer and career staff along with other city departments, including the police and water department, for their efforts in obtaining such a positive improvement in the fire protection grading,” Fire Chief John Justice said. “The city’s recent commitment to providing career firefighting staff on a 24-7 basis was a significant factor in the better ISO rating. In addition, the city’s commitment to a superior water supply and dedicated dispatch also contributed to the increased rating.”
Justice encourages all homeowners and businesses to contact their insurance providers to inform them of the new classification.
The Heart Saver awards, given by the American Heart Association to individuals who save a person’s life through Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, were given to Firefighter/Paramedic Chris Seeley and Justice.
In February, Seeley and Justice were dispatched on an EMS call for difficulty breathing. When they arrived at the scene, the patient was coherent and sitting in a chair, but having difficulty breathing. While assessing the woman, she went into cardiac arrest.
The firefighters performed two-person CPR and within a few minutes, the patient revived. She was then transported to a hospital by LifeCare.
She has since made a full recovery.
“We were just doing our jobs,” Justice said.

Sheriff, judge at odds over mailer
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler sent out a statement and automatic phone calls across the county Wednesday saying he did not endorse incumbent 43rd District Judge candidate Trey Loftin, following a mailer sent by the judge’s campaign that included a quote from Fowler.
However, Loftin said Thursday Fowler made the referenced statement to a room full of people at a fundraiser for Loftin and agreed to let Loftin’s campaign quote the sheriff. - Film director looking for local actors
