Sheriff’s call involves Tarrant deputy, toddler

Staff Reports

The Parker County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly conduct complaint involving a Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputy.

Tuesday afternoon in the Rio Brazos addition in southern Parker County, a shooting occurred involving the deputy and two other men.

According to Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler, local deputies were dispatched Tuesday to “unknown trouble” at a residence near the Brazos River around 1:30 p.m. after the Tarrant deputy apparently discharged two rounds from his duty weapon into the radiator of a truck occupied by the two men.

Sheriff’s investigators said the incident may have begun Oct. 14, when the men were reported prowling the neighborhood in a black truck. The incident prompted the Tarrant deputy to make a report and a patrol request for his home where he cares for a disabled female acquaintance.

Shortly after noon, sheriff’s communications officers received a call from the female regarding the men attempting to get her to answer the door of the residence.

According to the call for service sheet made by communications officers, the woman was noticeably distraught, however the suspects fled the area before deputies arrived. Investigators were told the female then called the Tarrant County deputy, who instructed her to lock the doors and call 9-1-1 if the men returned. The deputy, whose name is being withheld at this time, told Parker officials he immediately took off from duty at the Fort Worth Courts Building and went home where he found the woman obviously shaken.

The deputy, who made a disclosed statement regarding the shooting, told Parker officials the men returned to his home again shortly after he arrived to check the welfare of the female, and he approached the men and attempted to detain them until responding Parker County deputies arrived.

As the driver of the truck attempted to leave the property, the Tarrant deputy stated he shot two rounds into the truck’s radiator disabling the vehicle. Upon their arrival, Parker County deputies learned a 4-year-old child was inside the truck when the incident occurred.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The two men told deputies they were in the area attempting to contract with residents for their tree trimming service and they approached the female in her yard the previous week to ask about baby sitting services. A Parker County Sheriff’s spokesperson said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were being thoroughly investigated and confirmed both men had lengthy criminal records.

Parker County Sheriff Fowler and Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson were at the scene Tuesday to oversee the initial investigation on behalf of both departments. Fowler said the case would be presented to the Parker County District Attorney upon completion.
