Showing honor for the flag

PARKER COUNTY — Chuck Katlic is a flag afficionado.

The veteran and member of American Legion Post 163 in Weatherford has been fascinated with the flag for years. He recalls visiting a Parker County cemetery and not seeing one American flag. That, he thought, was a travesty, and he vowed to do something about it.

He, along with about 1,000 of his friends, have been placing flags on gravesites since 1999. He said “I’ve never been told no” and says he laid his 100,000th flag this past Memorial Day.

Katlic tried to explain more information about the flag during an American Flag presentation Tuesday morning at Martin Crest Assisted Living Center. In his opening prayer Katlic asked that “someday we will have God’s way and have peace in the world.”

Katlic and fellow veteran Tom Loudres led the presentation of the colors.

Veterans among the 40 participants were then asked to stand and be honored for their service. The two men then displayed the proper way to fold a flag, saying it must have exactly 13 folds “no more and no less.” The proper way to fold a flag goes back to the early colonists, Katlic said.

Loudres, a Vietnam War veteran, wore the shirt of another veteran who was killed in battle in Iraq. Loudres retired in 1996 after 27 years in the military.

Employees at the center also played a role in the 25-minute ceremony. Nelda Harrison, a volunteer with the center and its life enrichment coordinator, played trumpet during a rendition of “Taps.” Harrison said she appreciates all veterans and what they have done in their lives and was simply glad to contribute.
