City to revisit strategic plan

By BRIAN SMITH

Weatherford city officials are wasting little time in getting the new year off to a busy start.

Council members are meeting Thursday night in a 6:30 p.m. work session to begin plans for revision to the City’s Strategic Plan. In 2008, the City of Weatherford adopted a Strategic Plan that outlined the major goals and priorities of the city. The Strategic Plan is used to guide budget discussions and policy decisions by providing a common set of goals to achieve.

In a staff report, Director of Management and Budget Chad Janicek stated the city had been looking to revise its plan since last year’s budget process began. Major changes to the city’s economy, organization and population growth over the last few years have forced officials to consider changes and in what time frame (short- or long term.)

“The council stated at the time it wanted to revisit the plan to make sure it was up to date and reflected the needs and priorities of the residents,” Janicek said.

Council members were given a survey last month to focus on areas of individual concern.  As part of the session,  a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, or SWOT, analysis will take place. The council will also have an opportunity to discuss areas to be prioritized for the next few years, laying the groundwork for future budget discussions.

While it is highly unlikely any major decisions will come out of Thursday’s session, it can lay the groundwork for budget discussions for the fiscal year 2013-14 budget this summer.
