Parker County’s Courthouse has been and remains the county’s most identifying feature.
Enhancing the beauty of that courthouse is why Parker County Judge Mark Riley has formed a citizens committee that met for the first time last week, with a directive to bring ideas to the table from the community for making the courthouse a more prominent feature during Christmas but also year round.
“Of course the courthouse is the centerpiece of the downtown square, but in my opinion its beauty has never been fully recognized,” Riley said. “I want the courthouse to be recognized for what it is; the crown jewel of the square. To facilitate that process I have appointed a citizens committee to develop a plan for enhancing the exterior appearance.”
Riley said the six area residents appointed represent the business community, historical groups and the community at large.
“Each of them has exhibited a strong interest in preserving our heritage through their various commitments,” Riley said. “Once they complete their work, their suggestions will be presented to the Commissioners Court for consideration.”
Committee members are Chairperson Donna Tillman, Bob and Carolyn Glenn, Jonelle Bartoli, Britton Schweitzer and Lori Bennett.
“I am very excited and honored to be a part of this committee,” Tillman said. “The courthouse holds such a special place in my heart and in the hearts of my family. Our group will be making recommendations to the County Judge and Commissioners Court on ways to make our beautiful courthouse even more of a welcoming beacon to our city.”
While the look of the courthouse at Christmas is a focal point, the committee and county are already working together to make improvements, namely with the lighting.
Parker County’s Building and Grounds Department is working to repair electrical problems with the outside lights, according to Riley.
“We want her to stand out and shine as she should,” said Riley of the courthouse.
