A nutty nut

WEATHERFORD — Tilmon Bonner, who lives on North Street in Weatherford, was shelling pecans for the classic pie he makes every Thanksgiving, when something a little nutty caught his eye.

On the outside, the nut, collected from his 5-year-old Burkett Pecan tree appeared normal, but on the inside, the nut was all mixed up.

Instead of halves, it was split into thirds. And every third was ripe and plump.

Bonner’s wife, Paula,  said she took the nut to Jon Green, the county’s extension agent.

Green said he had never seen such a nut, she said, but he guessed that the tree might produce more.
