The “Gateway to Christmas” has opened.
Joe Timlin’s opinion during Saturday’s Christmas on the Square spoke for many people as large crowds congregated around the downtown square to check out the many vendors, vocal and dance groups and simply people watch. Timlin, who said he has attended every Christmas on the Square, said it wouldn’t be the holidays without the event.
“For me, this is the start of Christmas,” Timlin said while finishing up a free hot dog. “For some, it’s Black Friday. Christmas can start tomorrow as far as I’m concerned. It’s just a great event.”
The Chamber of Commerce, along with several corporate sponsors, host the event every year. After last year’s rather foul weather, organizers had to be glad to see Saturday’s picture perfect weather.
Still, the picture perfect weather didn’t bring out the Christmas spirit for everyone.
“I like the event. I like what they’re doing, but I just can’t get in the Christmas spirit when it’s in the mid 70s outside,” Mary Wittingham, of Altus, Okla., said. “I like my holidays with a few flurries, a warm fire and a good book.”
Wittingham was in town visiting family with her first grade granddaughter performing with the Mary Martin Elementary choir. Large crowds could be seen around both stages as vocal and dance groups performed throughout the afternoon.
Santa made a special trip from the North Pole for free photos with children waiting his appearance, who was taking photos with children at First Financial Bank. Several groups were having holiday raffles with others giving away food.
Christmas music could be heard on the south side of the square, courtesy of QX FM, which brought Tiffany Morgan around.
“It seems like the Christmas season starts earlier and earlier every year,” Morgan, of Weatherford, said. “Now’s about the right time, at least for me.”
