A 74-year-old man walking home shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday evening was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Briarhaven and pronounced dead at the scene.
Husni M. Abdeljalil, whose home was in the Briarwood Estates, was crossing Santa Fe after eating dinner with his family at a restaurant near the intersection, Weatherford Police Lt. Chris Crawford said.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled his death an accident as a result of blunt trauma to the neck, chest and abdomen after being struck by a vehicle on a public roadway.
The driver of the 2012 Ford pickup, Thomas Miller, also 74, was traveling southbound in the far outside right lane when the collision occurred, according to police.
Abdeljalil was in the area of the crosswalk, though it was not yet clear whether he was actually in the crosswalk, according to Crawford.
Abdeljalil was deceased when the Weatherford Fire Department and LifeCare arrived on scene.
Police are still trying to determine who had the right of way at the time, Crawford said.
The advanced accident team responded to the scene and helped conduct a preliminary investigation, according to police.
They have no evidence leading them to believe the driver was under the influence at the time, Crawford said. “Right now it appears to be a tragic accident.”
Abdeljalil’s oldest son, Eddie Abdel, said his father was born in Bethlehem and moved to the United States as a refugee in 1986 before settling in Weatherford in 1994, near his son’s business, Truck & Travel.
“He never felt much better in his life than when he moved to Weatherford,” Abdel said.
His father was grateful to the U.S. and loved the people, Abdel said. Even though they might be the only Muslim family in the city, his son said Abdeljalil was never angry with Americans and was very grateful to his country.
Abdeljalil was survived by his wife, Wedad, who he married in 1961, three sons, two daughters and 17 grandchildren, his son said.
He loved his family and they united under his leadership, Abdel said.
“He was a very basic man, like any farmer,” his son said, describing him as a grateful, fair, forgiving man who never hurt anyone and wanted his children to succeed.
“It is a mercy from God that he passed away when he was happy and at full strength,” Abdel said.
Every day, his father purchased bananas at Walmart and brought them to the family’s truck stop.
“All the people at the truck stop loved him, all the drivers, they used to call him ‘Papa,’” Abdel said.
Abdeljalil had just finished a meal of chicken-fried steak, one of his favorites, with family members at Granny’s Kitchen, his son said. Afterward, he told his family to go ahead and drop his wife and daughter off at their home nearby while he enjoyed the nice weather and a smoke and waited for the family to return and pick him up.
Abdel said he believes his father was crossing the street so it would be easier for them to pick him up at the entrance to Briarwood Estates. He does not fault the other driver, Abdel said.
