Police warn of card theft, abuse

WEATHERFORD — Weatherford police have issued a warning to residents about several cases of credit card theft and abuse. Police are hoping by releasing surveillance photos that someone in the community may be able to identify suspects involved in the theft cases.

Recently, the Weatherford Police Department has investigated several cases in which multiple suspects have gone in to local businesses and attempted or successfully used a series of stolen credit cards. Detectives in the Criminal Investigation Division have experienced an increase in this type of crime and notified local businesses.

In the photos above, the suspects have used or attempted to use stolen credit cards at Walmart, 1836 S. Main St., and Dollar General, 1909 Fort Worth Highway. Investigators are unsure if those who have stolen the credit cards are working separately or with a ring of organized criminals.

The Weatherford Police Department is encouraging anyone who may have information on these crimes or any other criminal activity to contact the department at 817-598-4300 or Parker County Crime Stoppers at 817-599-5555 or 1-800-942-STOP. Up to a $1,000 reward will be paid for information about this crime and callers may remain anonymous.

The Weatherford Police Department is also asking local businesses to continue practicing protective measures, such as asking for identification when a customer pays with a check or credit card, particularly if the customer is purchasing a multitude of monetary gift cards. If either is declined and the customer continues to attempt to pay with multiple credit cards, this may be an indication that credit/debit card abuse is occurring, police said.
