Manna Storehouse held its annual Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday, February 21 at Central Christian Church. The luncheon provides an opportunity to recognize the many volunteers who provide the services Manna gives the Parker County community.
Manna Storehouse was begun in 1985 by Weatherford ministers and community members, to provide a central agency to provide help to the needy of Parker County. As the county has grown, Manna’s services have grown. In 2012, Manna served 19,838 individuals in 6,231 Parker County families with food, clothing and utility and prescription assistance. Manna also serves as the distributor of Salvation Army funds in Parker County.
In addition, Manna organizes and operates the Santa’s Helpers Angel Tree Christmas program, which in 2012 provided gifts to 1,300 Parker County children.
Manna remains entirely volunteer-operated, with 135 active volunteers. Volunteers provide clients with registration and assistance, take in donations from the public, sort clothing and food, and run Manna’s monthly sale, which has become a major source of funds for utility and prescription assistance.
A special award, the “Golden Hanger Award,” was presented to volunteers Joe Lee and Eldon Berry for designing and constructing racks for the countless clothes hangers that come into Manna.
Rev. Ann Stevens, president of Manna Storehouse, recognized and thanked volunteers, whom she refers to as “the hands and feet of Jesus in our community.”
She also installed new members of the Manna Board of Directors, Cathy Kosikowski and Becky Rowe; and new officers Hoyt Stevens, director of operations, and Mike Briggs, treasurer. Returning board members include Annette Burks, Vernell Chadwell, Nancy Deison, Jamie Mittendorf, Prissy Neely, David Rothrock, Janice Smith, Gary Snow, Pam Walker and Wanda Yeats. Returning officers are Rev. Ann Stevens, president; John Good, first vice president; Catherine Smith, recording secretary; and Pat Long, corresponding secretary.
