County puts 3 percent raise in budget for employees

PARKER COUNTY — Parker County commissioners authorized a 3 percent cost of living increase for all rank and file county employees in a special budget session Wednesday, requesting the increases be added to budget salary lines, with the treasurer to adjust the county’s step and grade plan accordingly.

Judge Mark Riley and commissioners George Conley, Craig Peacock, John Roth and Dusty Renfro voted in favor of the increase.

The increase does not apply to elected officials, who were excluded from increases in salaries and benefits this budget year by a vote taken by commissioners Monday.

The increase does apply to employees in the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office is seeking an additional increase to bring the salaries of the county’s licensed peace officers up to the level of surrounding counties and cities.

Capt. Mike Morgan, of the sheriff’s office, has estimated the department needs about $550,000 to achieve parity, based on in-house surveys.

Riley said the county is considering the sheriff’s request and hopes to have an answer by the special budget session scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the first floor courtroom of the the courthouse on the square.
