Crowds upward of 30,000 are expected for this weekend’s Parker County Peach Festival.
Weatherford Chamber of Commerce President Tammy Gazzola said she is thankful for the cooler weather forecast for the weekend, with temperatures only scheduled to be in the mid 90s. Last year’s highs were a good 10 degrees warmer.
“We’ve been amazed with the way things have been coming along so smoothly. We’ve got a bumpercrop of peaches,” Gazzola said. “We’re just looking forward to a peachy day.”
The event runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the streets surrounding the downtown square. More than 200 vendors, including arts and crafts, food and others highlight the day. Entertainment on three stages will feature different styles of music, including, rock, country and blues.
The children’s stage and kiddie korner will open the day with the popular diaper derby races. Young performers from around the area will take the stage in hour-long shows throughout the day. Highlighting the activity is
Sunshine Emery, a local teacher who will perform her own acoustic afternoon set before being joined by some of her students for another set later in the day. Emery performs at several area venues on a regular basis
Another highlight will be the annual Weatherford Art Association art show located at 119 Palo Pinto which will be going throughout the day. The Annual “42” tournament will start bright and early at 8 a.m. at TexasBank Financial, according to a spokesperson.
Also getting started early will be entry acceptance for the food contest, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 163. Entries will be taken at the First Baptist Church. from 8 to 10 a.m. with judging going from 10 a.m. to noon. Winners will then be announced at 2 p.m.
Entries will be taken in both youth ages 9-17 and adults for items such as cobblers, pies, cakes etc. For more details and contest rules contact Diane at 817-304-1538 or Rachel at 817-371-9162.
Admission to the festival is only $5 for adults with children under 12 admitted free. Advance tickets for $4 can be purchased from the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce before Saturday.
With parking expected to be at a premium, a number of remote parking lots are available with free parking and free shuttles provided to the downtown venue. Both Weatherford High and the Ninth Grade Center are shuttle pickup and dropoff points along with Weatherford College, Hall Middle School and the Sheriff Posse grounds.
Away from the festival grounds but equally a major part of the event include the Peach Pedal Bike Ride where more than 2,000 riders will be taking part, according to Ride Director Brent Baker. Rides from 9 to 60 miles will be taking part throughout the day starting at 7:30 a.m. from Weatherford High. Each Pedal entry includes a free ticket to the festival, according to the event website www.peachpedal.com.
Baker says most of the people sign up the week of the event and even the day of. He reminds people they can sign up online through Thursday evening and at the high school starting at 6 a.m. Saturday in the Outback (athletic area) of the school.
Packets can be picked up from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Fort Worth Cycling and Fitness on Cherry Lane in Fort Worth, from noon to 4 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday at the Outback area of the high school.
