'The Rainmaker' opens TOTS season

WEATHERFORD – "The Rainmaker" by N. Richard Nash, courtesy of Samuel French, will open Theatre Off the Square’s 11th season beginning Friday, Sept. 4, and running weekends through Sunday, Sept. 20. Directed by Jon R. Kruse, cast members include Wally Jones, Damon Herbel, Joe Herbel, Patricia Howard, Michael Rudd, Lynn Self and Ray Shannon.

The play, written in 1954, was the basis for the 1956 movie by the same name, which starred Katharine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster, and also the Broadway musical, “110 in the Shade”. The setting for "The Rainmaker" is a drought stricken western ranch where a father lives with his two sons and only daughter, Lizzie. Concern for the land is one thing, but the main concern for Lizzie’s father and brothers is the fact that they can’t seem to get her married off and she’s not getting any younger. When a con man named Starbuck comes to town promising to bring rain, he decides to make winning Lizzie over a special project. The town agrees to go along with his rain making techniques, such as banging a big bass drum, but he has a limited amount of time to make good on his promise. Otherwise, he’ll have to face the wrath of the farmers and return the $100, as well.

"The Rainmaker" runs Fridays through Sundays, Sept. 4-20. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Theatre Off the Square is located at 114 N. Denton in Weatherford. Tickets are available in advance at the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce or by calling (817) 341-8687. Prices at the door are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Matinee tickets are $9. Season ticket holders are encouraged to call for selected seating. Audience members will receive a complimentary gift. For information, call (817) 341-8687 or visit the updated Web site at www.weatherfordtots.org.

Poll

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
