Elementary students in Poolville displayed their patriotism wearing red, white and blue; chanting U-S-A and waving flags and banners as they paraded through town lead by the Poolville Volunteer Fire Department Wednesday morning.
It was all part of their annual Veteran’s Day parade. After the student returned, their older classmates from Poolville Junior High joined them for a program lead by American Legion Post 163 Chaplain Chuck Katlic.
Katlic has lived in Poolville since 1999 and is frequently involved in teaching patriotism to area students.
“They’re the ones that are going to save our country,” Katlic said. “When this generation is gone they are what we have left. We owe a lot to these kids.”
He called Poolville the most patriotic little town he knows of.
Several Poolville students participated in the program by reading poems, reciting the pledge and singing the National Anthem. Students who participated included Megan Burnett, Dawson Harris, Tristan Chambers, Sarah Kelly, Stone Stegall, Tyler Tunnell, Catherine Leach and Dylan Burchard.
About a dozen local veterans also participated in the program sharing their branch of service and time served with the students
Marine Master Sgt. Luther Johnson has three grandchildren in Poolville schools. He said it’s outstanding the school district infuses patriotism into their students.
“It’s good to know someone cares,” he said.
Johnson briefly shared his story with the students of how his unit was attacked by terrorist in Beirut in 1983, killing 241 American troops. Johnson also served in Vietnam and Grenada.
“Veterans Day has so many mixed emotions for me,” Johnson said. “Many of my friends died and today is a day to celebrate. They died honorably. It’s a good celebration. It’s emotional for me.”
Following the program, veterans were invited to lunch at the Poolville United Methodist Church served by Poolville Junior High School students.
