Holiday volunteers are needed

It’s as much a part of the holidays as mistletoe, eggnog and Santa Claus.

For generations, Christmas shoppers have been greeted at the doors of various stores by volunteers merrily ringing bells and gathering donations in the unmistakable red kettles of the Salvation Army.

The local arm of the organization needs bell-ringers at both local Walmart locations and Super Save Foods.

“This year, the economy is the difference in years past,” Salvation Army spokesman Jim Spaulding said. “We in Texas are a little better off than most of the country, but we’re still down from where we were a year ago. There are lots of folks in Weatherford who have it tough, right now.”

Volunteer fundraisers are needed on selected days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Since the Salvation Army takes none of the money collected, all donated funds will be used in Parker County to support those in need. According to Spaulding, 20 percent of collections goes to Meals-on-Wheels, while the remainder is distributed through Manna for those in need locally with help with food and utility expenses and rent.

Organizations or businesses may assist in the fundraising project by volunteering to staff a door, or a store, for a day or more. Individuals can help by manning a post for two-hour shifts.

According to a release announcing the need for volunteers, 440 two-hour shifts are available.

“It really helps,” Spaulding said. “Sometimes folks are a little hesitant, but everybody comes back feeling blessed. It’s awesome.”
