Weatherford city staff spent their Saturday off team building via a friendly flag-football tournament.
Employees of the police department, fire department, utility department and city hall staff formed four teams and hit the field at 10 a.m. By mid afternoon the police department and utility department went head to head for the championship game with the WPD coming out on top 50-30.
“PD won finally,” said WPD Deputy Chief Wayne Slimp. “ This started out just between the fire department and police department and we played several full contact football games. We got tired of that real quick.”
This was the first year to transform it into a flag football game with four city departments.
“It’s great to get to know everybody,” Slimp said. “We all work for the city, but sometimes you don’t know who they are. It gets a little more camaraderie going.”
Jonathan Buckingham, a member of the city hall team, said the city support of the tournament was evident.
“It was jam packed,” he said. And while his team didn’t win he said, “It was relaxing just to have fun.”
Admission to the game and proceeds from concessions will benefit the city’s benevolent fund.
“That’s for if one of the employees gets sick and has to miss work and doesn’t have the time, it would help them cover groceries or bills and things like that,” said Katrina Harris of the fire department.
