Man shot in chest

Appears to be accidental

PARKER COUNTY — A 21-year-old man was shot in the chest shortly before midnight Saturday in the 100 block of Collett Court, the Parker County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday.

The victim, a resident of Cleburne, was shot in the upper right chest area in what appears to be an accidental shooting, according to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office.

They received the call as the man was being taken to a local hospital and deputies responded to both the hospital and the scene in the 100 block of Collett Court, Deputy Danie Huffman said.

Both the victim and shooter were cooperative, Huffman said.

Witnesses told investigators the victim was visting friends at the residence.

As they were “messing around” with handguns, which appeared empty, the shooter practiced firing the weapon, which fired a shot through the front door, striking the victim as he was smoking on the porch, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man was flown to a Fort Worth Hospital for treatment but did not undergo surgery.

He reportedly told investigators the bullet exited his body at the left rear shoulder blade.

Information on the man’s name and condition was not released Monday.

A routine investigation is ongoing and no one has been charged, the sheriff’s office reported.

“Every gun owner should understand the importance of proper training, weapons education, gun locks and safes,” Sheriff Larry Fowler said. “This is a prime example of irresponsible gun ownership and handling.”

Fowler said anytime extreme caution is not used in the handling of any weapon, accidents are bound to occur.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
