WEATHERFORD —
The Weatherford Independent School District notified the Weatherford Police Department Thursday they had received several complaints from local residents who said an individual or individuals were soliciting and claiming to work for the school district.
“Please be advised that no one from Weatherford ISD has been authorized to solicit door-to-door to any of its parents, partners or community members,” Derek Moore, director of communications for WISD, said.
The few inquiries the district has received indicated the solicitor wanted to enter the homes and discuss selling educational material and website advertising with the homeowners, according to Moore.
The person reportedly had a list of other individuals he had talked to and, in some cases, even mentioned students’ names, Moore said.
Weatherford police are requesting residents call police if they have been contacted in this manner, know of similar incidents that have occurred in the last few days or have seen this person or vehicle or any other suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
Solicitors not registered through the State of Texas must obtain a permit from the city, according to a statement from the Weatherford Police Department.
A permit from the City of Weatherford is good for 45 days from the date of issue and must be carried and presented when requested.
No hard sales are allowed and if asked to leave, the solicitor must leave.
Solicitation is only allowed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Weatherford Police Department offers the following tips when dealing with solicitors.
• Approach the door with a telephone in your hand, preferably a land line.
• Don’t open the door, look through the peep hole or ask who it is.
• Never let strangers into your home without checking identification, and call their company if you aren’t sure.
• If they are uncooperative, warn them you are calling police and dial 911.
