WEATHERFORD —
With summer heat putting the kibosh on many outdoor activities, Weatherford officials are scheduling National Night Out, normally held in August, for Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m.
It’s the 29th annual event and a great opportunity for residents to get out and meet their neighbors and learn some effective crime deterrent techniques at the same time. National Night Out involves more than 9,500 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, more than 32 million people were expected to participate.
Several neighborhoods throughout the city will be sponsoring “block party” style events as they have done for many years. Local Project Coordinator Weatherford Police Det. Beth Turnbow said many neighborhoods go all out, passing out fliers to all the residents in the neighborhood and others tend to take a more relaxed approach.
“Some of the neighborhoods have struggled while others have just flourished depending on what they put into it,” Turnbow said. “Some of the areas that have had big parties in the past we just haven’t heard from so far.”
Lake Weatherford, Westover Village, Fox Hollow Townhomes, Community Baptist Church, TimberCreek Estates, Cypress View Villas and the Downtown District are all scheduling events, Turnbow said. Events will include visits from Weatherford’s police officers, fire fighters, McGruff the Crime Dog and members of the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association.
“National Night Out is a wonderful way to build neighborhood unity and strengthen police-community partnerships,” Turnbow said. “Neighbors meet neighbors – and citizens and local law enforcement have the opportunity to enhance their relationships.”
