PARKER COUNTY —
A grassfire that consumed approximately 400 acres Thursday afternoon and evening burned mostly in Parker County after starting in Hood County near FM 51 South and Temple Hall Highway.
Firefighters from Parker County, Hood County and the Texas Forest Service were able to contain the blaze after around 6:30 p.m., Emergency Services District No. 6 Chief George Teague said.
Several structures, including a church, were saved from the fire, Teague said.
Dozens of units responded and they had a TFS helicopter helping at one point, according to Teague.
Though most of the fuel was brush and grass, the fire traveled into cedars near the beginning, said Teague.
“That’s like pouring kerosene on the ground and lighting it,” Teague said.
Firefighters, including volunteers from Spring Creek, were there all night to keep it contained and put out flareups, mainly caused by the low humidity.
The wind was not bad, Teague said.
The south Parker County area is particularly dry.
“It’s amazing the difference between the northern part of the county and the southern part of the county,” Teague said.
The northern portion of the county got some rain earlier in the summer.
The month of July was not very busy as far as fires, but they’ve been busy this week, Teague said.
Four grass fires were going across the county Thursday afternoon.
A smaller grassfire reportedly burned close to structures in the Peaster area around the same time.
The Democrat was unable to obtain more information from the Texas Forest Service, the Parker County Fire Marshal’s Office or the Hood County Fire Marshal’s Office immediately Friday.

Sheriff, judge at odds over mailer
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler sent out a statement and automatic phone calls across the county Wednesday saying he did not endorse incumbent 43rd District Judge candidate Trey Loftin, following a mailer sent by the judge’s campaign that included a quote from Fowler.
However, Loftin said Thursday Fowler made the referenced statement to a room full of people at a fundraiser for Loftin and agreed to let Loftin’s campaign quote the sheriff. - Film director looking for local actors
