Holidays events this weekend: tree contest, Christmas on the Square

WEATHERFORD — Residents will have a chance to take part in two events this weekend to promote the holiday spirit.

Over at City Hall, residents have had a chance to choose their favorite tree during the Fantasy Forest Christmas Tree Decorating Contest and Silent Auction. The Standard (5 feet or higher) and Table Top (2 feet to 3 feet) trees have been on display and available for judging since Nov. 5.

The silent auction will close at noon Friday with the highest bidder getting the tree. Groups receive all the money for their decorated tree but don’t always keep the money, according to Kim Thieme with the City of Weatherford’s Main Street Program and Special Events. She said many groups donate their monies to worthy nonprofits.

Voting on the People’s Choice awards end Monday. Winning groups will be announced Monday with the standard tree winner winning $200 and the tabletop winner getting $150.

The tree decorating contest is a perfect lead-in for the city’s annual Christmas Parade and Christmas on the Square Saturday. The parade starts at 10 a.m. heading north on Main Street from the Ninth Grade Center, going around the courthouse and west on Palo Pinto before ending at Cherry Park. Santa will be a highlight of the parade and then will make his way to First Financial Bank for pictures throughout the afternoon.

Christmas on the Square runs from noon to 5 p.m. All sorts of family activities, dance groups, choirs, holiday characters will make for a festive atmosphere. With picture perfect weather expected, everyone is encouraged to come out for the event.
