Legion hosting blood drive Saturday

By SALLY SEXTON

Roughly two years ago, the American Legion Post 163 began doing something for own military family.

The post opened an account, in the name of American Legion Post 163 with Carter BloodCare, as a personalized account for legion members and their families.

This year, the legion is hosting a blood drive to help fill that account. The drive takes place Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the South Main Walmart in Weatherford.

“About two years ago, one of our members decided to open an account on behalf of veterans,” Rachael Watson, president of the ladies’ auxiliary, said. “But this is something that doesn’t just go to veterans. It’s also for their families.

“As a family ourselves, we want to take care of everybody.”

Since the Carter account was opened, around 83 units of blood have been donated, with some people giving on a regular basis.

“We’ve given some to veterans that were either deployed, on leave or here, as well as their families,” Watson said.

The event will offer donors a free Coca-Cola koozie and beverage, as well as a chance to enter to win a package that includes a new HD TV.

Donors can register for the contest by logging on to gofightgive.org. For questions, contact Watson at 817-371-9762.
