MILLSAP – Hope your new year is off to a strong and happy start and that you have many plans in the works for 2013.
One organization that is already busy with plans for the coming year is Millsap’s Heritage Society.
This group will host its annual membership drive at the regular monthly meeting on Jan. 14. They invite anyone interested in the history of our area, as well as those interested in general community support, to come and have a bowl of chili and learn more about all of the endeavors, both past and future, that the club is about. With the kickoff beginning at 7 p.m. at Millsap City Hall an individual can join for the year for $10, or a family fee is $15.
If you become a member some of the goals you can look forward to being involved in are fencing around the Log Cabin Park and building a grape arbor. The group is also looking at the possibility of moving the ancestral Bankhead house, located south of town, onto the cabin grounds and is in preliminary plans for an educational two-day festival in May. This is a great opportunity to be involved on a multitude of levels with many worthwhile projects.
Another busy group is the Abandoned Cemetery Association, with some of its most active members from around here who are always at work upgrading and preserving the 62 graveyards under their care. This winter one of their main goals is to fence the Edwards Cemetery, which is located east of Poe Prairie. This organization also tackles the myriads of paperwork necessary to have documentation of protection from the state against intrusion by public means (i.e., pipelines) on these grounds. This requires many hours of detailed research and written presentation, so the group works in many ways to take care of these cemeteries.
While our students will be back in classes beginning Monday congratulations are in order to the Lady Bulldogs High School volleyball players who achieved academic all-district. They are Lauren Power, Mikelyn Kruger, Melissa Jones, Sarah Mahan and Courtney Coker. Their coach said these honors are very hard to achieve, so a very hardy well done to each of these young women is in order. Congrats and thanks for making Millsap proud!
On another front here’s something that is new to the Millsap Afterschool Program, very innovative and of use to the entire community. With their school sponsor’s help students are doing what they call a “school tube newscast.” This is a monthly program available for viewing on the schools’ website. Some of the highlights of the program include interviewing a teacher, one of the students going to a local restaurant and giving a critique of the place and food and school sports news.
The program runs about 15 minutes and is absolutely one of the best things I’ve watched in a long time! Can’t wait for the next MAP Bulldog Newscast.
Adina Jobe recently suffered a fracture, and as she is recovering at home we wish her a speedy get well! Ms. Jobe, while well into her 90s, is a very involved member of many community organizations and endeavors and will be missed by many until she is able to get back to her busy schedule.
Congrats to Larry Walden on being sworn in as county commissioner for Precinct 3. I’ve been told that it has been over 20 years since a person from Millsap has held this position, so we are very proud of the new commissioner.
