An update on getting public recognition on Weatherford being the hometown of Larry Hagman is scheduled for Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
The Larry Hagman Memorial Committee, which is looking to have signs, statues and a possible road named after the iconic resident, is expected to make a report on their findings of costs and other information. The council is expected to deliberate and consider recommendations and possible locations.
Hagman passed away late last year and the committee was formed to help honor the actor, best known for playing J.R. Ewing on “Dallas” and Maj. Tony Nelson on “I Dream of Jeannie.”
Also on the agenda is a request by the Weatherford Police Department to apply for grant funding through the criminal justice division of the governor’s office. The police department applied for grant funding for the coming year for a patrol boat and was approved for funding. However due to monetary shortfalls within the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, the application was not funded. City council approved the application in March 2012. A new resolution is needed for funding for this fiscal year.
The funding, if approved, would go toward the purchase of a motorboat for use on Lake Weatherford. The department’s present boat is a 15-foot 1995 model, which is in need of repairs and cannot do many of the things needed to be effective, such as tow in stranded boaters or host a full dive team in case of emergency.
The new boat would be used for marine safety enforcement, allowing officers to enforce the Texas Water Safety Act, conduct fire/search and rescue responses to water emergencies, on-the-water medical emergency response, dive team responses for body or crime evidence recoveries, assist the City of Weatherford water plant due to water being pumped from the lake for city services, natural disaster assistance, and cooperative agreements to surrounding areas and agencies, according to a staff report.
It would also create a partnership between the department and lake residents and patrons.
The council will also consider adopting a mosquito surveillance and response plan for the 2013 season.
Because of the warm winter and wanting to take a proactive approach in preventing West Nile Virus, which was a problem to the east last summer, city staff has worked with Municipal Mosquito Co. to develop a plan. Council is also expected to discuss the cost of working with the company as opposed to doing the mosquito work themselves.
