Most area school districts have contested May elections

From Staff Reports

With the close of filings on Friday, most area school districts will have contested races in the May 11 elections.

Weatherford ISD

The incumbents for the three board member seats whose terms are up in May – Place 3 Trustee Ashley Conlon, Place 4 Trustee Gail Wirtanen and Place 5 Trustee Charlie Martinez – have all filed for re-election.

Each have opponents. Jeromy Puckett filed to run in Place 4. Philip Newkirk and Randy Hynes are seeking the Place 3 seat, and Joshua Tarbay has filed to run for Place 5.

Weatherford ISD will also have a proposed $107.32 million bond package on the May ballot.

Millsap ISD

Two seats with expiring terms in May drew three candidates – incumbents Tommy Lucia and Jerry Walker and challenger Timothy Kukuk. The top two vote winners will win the seats.

Aledo ISD

Two seats are up for election this May on the AISD, and both incumbents – Place 4 Trustee Steve Bartley and Place 5 Trustee Bobby Rigues – have filed to retain their seats and are not opposed, negating the need for an election in that district

Springtown ISD

There are two contested races in SISD this May. Mike Ray has filed to keep his Place 1 seat, and has a challenger in Rusty Brawner. Place 3 incumbent Vicky Trichel also filed for re-election and a new three-year term, and will be up against challenger Jay Grubis.

Place 2 incumbent Keith Springfield filed for re-election and is uncontested.

Place 7, a two-year unexpired term, will be considered in a special May 11 election. The vacancy was created by the resignation of Kelly Mayo in July 2012. Al Garrett was appointed to fill the vacancy. No opponents have filed for Place 7 so far. Filing for a place on the special election ballot began Feb. 25 and runs through March 11. Candidate packets for the SISD can be picked up at the SISD Administration Office, 301 E. 5th St.

Weatherford College

Mac Smith has filed to run for Place 1, currently occupied by Jean Bryant. Bryant has not filed for re-election.

Place 2 holder Elain Carter has filed for re-election and will be challenged by two opponents, Don Allen and Dale Fleeger.
