A search warrant executed in the homicide investigation involving murder suspect Nicholas “Nick” David Camfield detailed a gruesome, bloody scene found by those who went to check on the welfare of the victim.
On Monday, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death of John “J.D.” Daniel Doss II a homicide due to multiple, blunt force, penetrating injuries to the head and neck. His mutilated body was found Jan. 16.
The items seized from the Springtown-area residence by Parker County sheriff’s investigators were listed in an affidavit return as a bloody pickaxe, a bloody ice pick, a meat tenderizer, an electric knife, pocket knives, wadded duct tape, bloody blankets and clothing, condoms, cell phones and a rifle.
Meanwhile, Doss’ mother, Lisa Means, who had not had contact with her son in recent years, said Monday she learned of her son’s death Friday, two days after he was found, after her brother saw information on the Internet and called her.
Means was scheduled to talk with the sheriff’s office Tuesday to obtain more details about what happened.
“He was precious,” Means said, describing her son as tall, friendly and sweet. “I understand he had a lot of friends.”
Means said she wanted ask people to stop making remarks or omissions of the truth so she could mourn and have some dignity.
A friend reportedly found Doss’ body at the residence last week where one of the men was reported to be house sitting for an out-of-town resident.
Camfield answered Doss’ phone when the friend called and told the friend that Doss was outside shooting birds, according to the search warrant affidavit.
Later, during the evening of Jan. 16, the friend showed up at the residence in the 200 block of Valley Meadows Drive and reportedly observed blood on Camfield and in the kitchen.
Camfield told the friend that he’d just killed a pig, according to the search warrant affidavit.
The friend also saw what he described as a body wrapped in a blanket inside one of the bedrooms and hair on or around the blanket consist with the Doss’, according to investigators.
The friend then left, according to officials, and authorities were contacted.
After taking Camfield into custody outside the house, deputies found Doss’ body wrapped in a blanket on a bed in the master bedroom of the double-wide mobile home.
While en route to the sheriff’s office, Camfield asked if Doss was still alive, according to the affidavit.
Camfield told investigators he struck Doss in the head multiple times with a pickaxe after Doss fell asleep Jan. 12, according to Texas Ranger Anthony Bradford.
“Camfield stated he did this because he was ‘afraid’ and the ‘voices in his head’ were telling him to do it,” Bradford wrote.
“Camfield further admitted that he scalped and otherwise mutilated Doss’ body over the next four days before the arrival of PCSO deputies.”
Camfield remains in Parker County Jail under a $1 million bond for murder.
