A fashionable affair

United Way luncheon, fashion show packs the Doss

By SALLY SEXTON

Fun, fashion and laughter kicked off the United Way of Parker County’s second annual Compassion with Fashion fund raising event Friday afternoon.

With the event completely sold out, United Way executive director Oleta Parker and president Kim Cherryhomes greeted the packed crowd at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center.

“We think of the United Way as the umbrella of money,” Cherryhomes said of the organization, which helps support the community and its programs.

In recent years, United Way of Parker County has been able to distribute more than $323,000 to community programs.

“One of the things that makes us stand out a little is our accountability,” Cherryhomes said. “We go and visit these programs and assess their needs and determine the funding.”

With radio personality and pro rodeo hall of famer Bob Tallman emceeing the event, volunteers took their turns on the catwalk, modeling the latest fashions from area companies, including Zinnias 2 Zebras, Teskey’s, L Boutique, Cowgirl Junkie, Belk, Saddle Bags, Forte, Retrospection, What a Girl Wants, Razzberry Lane, Rhema, Truly Trendy and Leesha’s Boutique.

“As a rodeo man, this is my third fashion show that I’ve ever done,” Tallman joked.

Aside from the fashion show, several exhibits were set up for the event’s silent auction, which included donated items from Teskey’s, Coutureville, Plains Capital Bank, Holland Lake Nursing Center, Weatherford Regional Medical Center and more.

In addition, door prizes contributed by businesses were also given out.

“Thank you so much. All of you have helped support the United Way by participating with us this year,” Parker told the crowd.
