Zonta plans to deal fun at annual casino night fundraiser

By BRIAN SMITH

Zonta Club of Parker County is asking for the public’s help in furthering the status and education of women.

The club is hosting its 11th Annual Casino Night Saturday, March 23, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Wild Mushroom Restaurant in Weatherford.

Club President Peggy Hutton said the event is the local club’s biggest fundraiser of the year and funds a number of scholarships for women. The club also benefits a number of local organizations including Center of Hope, the Senior Center, Parker County Health Foundation and more.

“We gave 14 scholarships last year,” Hutton said. “It’s not only just for high school students but we also give scholarships for the single mother who wants to improve her lot in life to support her family.”

Hutton said more than 20 scholarship applications have been received for this year’s scholarships, which will be awarded at the annual Status of Women luncheon in May. Hutton said the amount of scholarship monies given is directly and solely based on the amount raised at the annual Casino Night.

Tickets for the event, which are $50 in advance and $60 at the door, include $2,000 in play money and heavy hors d’Oeuvres. People who are not into gambling are still encouraged to take part in the event, as silent and live auctions will be taking place. Some of the auction items include dinner for 10 at the Wild Mushroom, a week stay at a vacation home in Colorado, a large grill with a donation of meat from Hamilton Meats and more, Hutton said.

“It’s just a fun evening, whether or not you gamble,” Hutton said. “Whether or not you come to gamble or not, you can realize that you are making a personal commitment to education and that’s a wonderful thing.”

To donate an item for the silent auction or raffle, contact Gail Wirtanen at 817-771-8082.

Sponsorships are also needed to defray the costs of the event and range from $250 to $1,500. To become a sponsor, contact Amy Mercer at amy.mercer@tgmercer.com or Sharon Chisholm at sharon@tgmercer.com.
