Estes opposes bill to let Texas voters decide whether to impose two-term limits on statewide officeholders

State Sen. Craig Estes believes Texans already have the ability to impose term limits on elected officials – it’s called the voting booth.

Estes, R-Wichita Falls, whose District 30 includes Parker County, was one of four senators to oppose a bill that, if now approved by the House, will let voters decide whether to set two-term limits on statewide elected officials – including the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, land and agriculture commissioners and railroad commissioners.

The Texas Senate approved the bill 27-4. Joining Estes in opposition were fellow Republicans Brian Birdwell, of Granbury, Glenn Hegar, of Katy, and Tommy Williams, of The Woodlands. The measure now goes to the House.

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” Estes told the Dallas Morning News. “To single out one branch of government isn’t right.”

Sen. Kevin Eltife, R-Tyler, proposed the bill, that he said lets the voters decide whether statewide elected officials should be limited to two terms in office. If approved, the tenures of current statewide officeholders would not be counted.
