A Parker County grand jury indicted Nicholas “Nick” David Camfield on a charge of capital murder Thursday in the brutal slaying of John “J.D.” Daniel Doss II in January.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death of Doss a homicide due to multiple, blunt force, penetrating injuries to the head and neck. His mutilated body was found Jan. 16 after a friend of Doss’ went to check on him at a residence in the 200 block of Valley Meadows Drive. 

The witness reportedly observed blood on Camfield and in the kitchen, and what he described as a body wrapped in a blanket inside one of the bedrooms. 

Investigators said 23-year-old Camfield admitted to scalping and otherwise mutilating Doss’ body over the course of four days. They also seized a bloody pickaxe, a bloody ice pick and other items from the home.

Camfield was originally charged with murder in Doss’ death, but a  grand jury indicted him on a charge of capital murder as well.

Count one of the indictment alleges that Camfield intentionally caused the death of Doss by striking Doss with a pickaxe while robbing or attempting to rob Doss and killed him in the course of burglarizing or attempting to burglarize the house where Doss’ body was found. 

The second count alleges Camfield intentionally or knowingly caused the death of Doss by striking him with a pickaxe while committing felony theft of property (more than $1,500, less than $20,000). 

Details on the alleged theft, burglary and robbery have not been released by investigators or prosecutors.

The indictment appears to confirm reports from Doss’ friends, who told the Democrat that they understood Doss was house-sitting for an out-of-town friend, rather than Camfield, as was originally reported by the Parker County Sheriff’s Office in a statement released to the media.

Camfield remains in the Parker County Jail with bond set at $1 million, according to jail records. 

He has been appointed an attorney, Jack Stoffregen, through the Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases program, court records show. 

If convicted of capital murder, Camfield would face the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole. 

Assault on a police officer

Cody Scott Sherwood, 22, was indicted by a Parker County grand jury on a charge of aggravated assault of a public servant involving a Jan. 26 dragging of a Springtown police officer. 

Officer Brad Sauls was dispatched to the 600 block of East 6th Street regarding a domestic disturbance between Sherwood and his father. 

When Sauls arrived, Sherwood was found in a vehicle trying to leave, according to Springtown Police Lt. Curtis Stone. When the officer attempted to open the vehicle door, Sherwood “gassed it” and took off, dragging the officer a short distance before he was able to get free, Stone said.

Sherwood then reportedly drove away.

The officer had some minor injuries, Stone said.

Witness tampering

A woman accused of coersing a child witness in a child abuse case was indicted by a Parker County grand jury on two counts of tampering with a witness. 

Charmin Taree Wilson, 30, of Parker County, removed the witness from the home where CPS placed the child after the alleged abuse was reported, punished the child for talking with authorities and abruptly moved the witness to Louisiana, court records allege.

Roy Villarreal, 24, of Weatherford, was arrested in August on a charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact after, Weatherford police claim, he molested a child who was under 10 years old on multiple occasions.

After CPS contacted Wilson in October about comments made by the child to school employees, Wilson reportedly told Villarreal she punished the child for talking, the investigator states. 

She then pulled the child from school that week and moved her to Louisiana, according to authorities. 

Villarreal was sentenced to six years in prison earlier this month after pleading guilty to second-degree felony indecency with a child. 

Embezzlement

Accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from an East Parker County company, Danielle Sherrie Jordan, 41, was indicted on a charge of second-degree felony theft of property. 

Jordan is a former staff accountant in payroll for TG Mercer Consulting Services, a pipe transportation company, and is accused of stealing from the company by using former employees’ information to deposit fraudulent payroll checks into her own account, according to a probable cause affidavit.
