Comedy to kick off new year at Theatre Off the Square

Theatre Off the Square presents ‘Lend Me a Tenor’ from Jan. 25 through Feb. 10.

Theatre Off the Square presents ‘Lend Me a Tenor’ from Jan. 25 through Feb. 10.

“Lend Me A Tenor” is set in September 1934. Saunders (Pat Dohoney), the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Merelli (Nikolai Braswell), Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Otello.

The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max (Andrew Manning) believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Merelli’s Otello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Merelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo.

The comedy is written by Ken Ludwig and produced by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc. It is directed by Pat Dohoney with set design by Mike West.

The cast is rounded out with Cynthia Daniels as Maria (Tito’s wife), Megan Ruth Nieves as the Soprano, Karen Dohoney as the Chairman of the Opera Guild and Hank Minor as the bellhop.

Opening night audiences receive a sweet treat from a new local merchant, The Nook Bakery and Bistro in Hudson Oaks.

“’Tenor’ was a TOTS audience favorite a few years back” said Dohoney, “and I hope to repeat its success.”
