J.C. Hood, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, surrounded by family in Weatherford.
Service is 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at First Baptist Church of Weatherford. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Lipan. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at White’s Funeral Home, 130 Houston Ave., Weatherford.
J.C. Hood was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Granbury, one of four children, to the late Edwin S. and Lela Kate Heathington Hood. He graduated from Granbury High Scool and attended North Texas Agricultural College (now the University of Texas-Arlington), Texas Wesleyan University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He married Cleo Lovell Clary in 1939, who preceded him in death in 1990 after 51 years of marriage.
J.C. was ordained to ministry at First Baptist Church in Granbury in 1947. He worked at the post office in Granbury and pastored churches in Bennett, Thorp Spring Baptist Mission (where he built the old white church building that still stands), First Baptist Church of Acton and Bowles Memorial Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, from 1958 to 1963. J.C. also worked for Claude Harris, who was the founder of the Girls Ranch in Breckenridge, where he obtained funds for the start up of the home. He later became the administrator of the home. The Girls Ranch was later given to Buckner Orphans Home and was moved to Lubbock two years later. After retiring from the ministry, J.C. worked for the Texas Department of Public Welfare for 15 years, five years in Arlington and 10 years in Mineral Wells.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Doris Elizabeth Mullican Hood, of Weatherford; stepdaughters, Susan Mullican, of Quitman, Marion Wallace, of Hutto, and Paula Stephenson and husband, Michael, of North Richland Hills; seven step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Charlene Ball, of Weatherford, and Pamela Long and husband, Bobby, of San Antonio; nephew, Charlie Hood, of Weatherford; special family friends, Gary Coats, of Quitman, and Jean Buford and Bruce Boling, of Weatherford; numerous cousins; and a host of loving friends.
J.C. was preceded in death by a wife, Lovell Hood; brothers, Jimmy Hood, of Weatherford, and Roy Hood, of Stephenville; sister, Mary Eady, of San Antonio; two step-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and his parents.
