Ellen Pickard MacKenzie

Dr. Ellen Pickard MacKenzie died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at the age of 92.

Funeral service is noon Wednesday at Mt. Olivet Episcopal Church, 530 Pelican Ave., New Orleans, La. Interment will take place in Weatherford on Friday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, La., 6-11 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will resume at Mt. Olivet Episcopal Church 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.

Dr. MacKenzie was born in Weatherford and was a resident of Gretna, La. She was the beloved wife of Joseph H. Vincent by second marriage and the late Hector E. Picou by first marriage; the daughter of the late Donald MacKenzie and Lucy Pickard MacKenzie; the mother of William M. Picou and John L. Picou; stepmother of Gayle Vincent Callahan, Eric M. Vincent and Connie M. Vincent Cavdar; and grandmother of Roger W. Picou.

Dr. MacKenzie attended Weatherford High School and graduated from the University of Texas magna cum laude in 1941. She attended Yale University School of Medicine, received her medical doctorate’s degree in 1944 (first wartime class to encompass four-year course into three). She received pediatric training at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Montreal; Herbert Reddy Hospital, Montreal; and Hospital Notre Dame, Montreal. Subsequent pediatric fellowship was received at Ochsner Clinic, New Orleans, La., from 1948-1949. She opened her private practice in pediatrics in Gretna from 1949-1963.

Dr. MacKenzie received psychiatric training in 1963-1964 at the LSU School of Medicine and Charity Hospital of New Orleans. She returned to her private practice in Gretna in 1965. She was a member of Jefferson Parish Medical Society from charter 1960, third president and first woman president 1963, Louisiana State Medical Society, Louisiana Pediatric Society (president 1954), and later branch of American Academy of Pediatrics. She was also a member of New Orleans Mensa Society and was involved in the founding/start of West Jefferson Medical Complex (circa 1958). She retired from private practice in 2005.
