Ross Robertson Jr.

WEATHERFORD —

WEATHERFORD — Ross Robertson Jr, 82, a lifelong resident of Weatherford, passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, surrounded by family at his home.

Ross L. Robertson Jr. was born Aug. 1, 1930, in Weatherford, son of the late Ross Lafayette Robertson Sr. and Golden Tabor Robertson. At a young age, Ross served as the unofficial mascot of the fire department and got the nickname “Rooster,” which stuck with him the rest of his life. Living near the fire station, his father tasked him with waking the firemen in the morning. When old enough, he signed on to be a volunteer fireman, a service he continued until 1985.

In 1951, he started work for the City of Weatherford. Over the next four decades, he worked as a police dispatcher, fireman, building inspector, city warehouse manager and, finally, as the city’s purchasing agent. He retired in 1991 after 40 years of service to the city and residents of Weatherford.

Ross was preceded in death by his mother, Golden, and father and former Chief of Police, Ross L. Robertson Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Messimer Robertson of Weatherford; son, Jerry Robertson of Bedford; daughter, Debbie Vaughan and husband, Dean, of Weatherford; grandsons, Alex Robertson of Dallas, Shawn Robertson of Euless, and Jason Vaughan of Annapolis, Md.; sister, Virginia Freeman of Watonsville, Cali.; sisters-in-law, Thelma Messimer, Mary Lou Messimer and Dora Mae Messimer, all of Weatherford; family friends, Suzanne Tandy and Katherine Towson; many nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in White’s Chapel of Memories, 130 Houston Ave., Weatherford. Interment will follow at Spring Creek Cemetery. Visitation is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
