Doris Jean McCarty Bragg

RICHARDSON – Doris Jean McCarty Bragg, 84, of Richardson, died Feb. 25, 2013, of complications from a 13-year battle with Parkinson-Plus Syndrome.

A memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Spring Valley United Methodist Church, 7700 Spring Valley Road, Dallas, TX 75254, preceded by a private family graveside service in Restland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Restland Funeral Home.

Doris was born Feb. 20, 1929, in Weatherford to Norman T. and Adele McCarty. Doris was the oldest of six children and she graduated from Weatherford High School in 1947. As a young, striking beauty, Doris moved to Dallas and lived with her Aunt Sue Garrett to attend Arlington State College and SMU. Doris was a member of SOS Sorority.

On Feb. 21, 1953, Doris married a very tall and handsome Francis Bragg. They began their lives together in Oak Cliff, raising two children. Doris was a member of the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts, The Dallas Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors and embraced a career as a real estate agent and broker in Oak Cliff.

Lifelong friends were made in Oak Cliff and at Glen Oaks United Methodist Church in the Open Door Sunday School Class. Doris and Francis spent many years playing couples’ bridge, attending dinner parties and traveling with their friends. In 1974, the family moved to Richardson, where Doris was a member of the Richardson Women’s Club, Richardson Republican Women’s Club, Eastern Star, Spring Valley United Methodist Church’s Beacon Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. Doris was a bright, strong willed, quick-witted, caring person, who loved to cook, bake, read, travel, shop and play bridge. Most of all, Doris loved to visit her mother and family as often as she could in Weatherford.

Doris is survived by her husband, Francis Bragg, and son, Barry Bragg, both of Richardson; daughter, DeEtte Bragg Peters and son-in-law, Paul Peters, Jr.; grandchildren, Taelor, Lauren and Price Peters, all of Dallas; brother, Ray McCarty and wife, Mary, of Weatherford; sisters, Carolyn Chylmanski and husband, Frank, of Weatherford, Anita Sparks, of Weatherford, Norma Stafford, of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Sandy Cammack, of Yorba Linda, Calif.; many nieces and nephews and cousins; her extended Bragg and Peters familie;s and many long time devoted friends.

Her parents, Norman and Adele McCarty, preceded Doris in death.

The family wishes to thank Doris’ longtime caregiver, Gloria Mcghie, Cora Smith and the staff at The Gardens of Richardson, who helped take care of our mother as if she were their own. The family would like to thank Hospice Plus and Accappella Home Health Care  for their loving care during these last months, to Dr. Boppana and to Mr. John Dvork for his caring visits and flowers each week during her extended illness. We are forever grateful to you all and, if able, our mother would take care of your family in the same compassionate way. She will return the favor from her resting place in Heaven.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to be made “To Ease the Burden-Find the Cure for Parkinsons,” to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, NY, NY 10163-4777 or to the Spring Valley United Methodist Church Foundation, 7700 Spring Valley Road, Dallas, TX 75254.
