Ann Pitchford passed from this life early Monday morning, Jan. 30, 2012, at her home in Victoria, Texas, lovingly surrounded by her husband and daughter.
She was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Greenville, Texas, to parents Carl Alexander Stewart and Annie Will (Coggins) Stewart. Her parents moved to Weatherford, Texas, when she was a young child, where her father was the manager of J.C. Penney. Ann attended school, graduating early at the young age of 16 from Weatherford High School in the class of 1946. She attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas.
On Jan. 22, 1950, Ann Stewart married Tom Pitchford in a ceremony at her parents’ home. She then followed her new husband to College Station, where he was in school. For the next 62 years Ann was by his side as they moved across Texas and California with their growing family. Ann was the mother of nine children — she considered that her greatest accomplishment and was proud of her wife and mother role.
Ann was a Christian woman, loving her God, and was a member of the Church of Christ. Active in her children’s lives as a Sunday school teacher, Brownie scout leader and room mother, Ann also shared a love for the written word, whether reading or writing down thoughts and ideas. For 10 years, Ann proudly wrote a column “Lolita — La Ward News” that was published weekly in the Edna Herald newspaper.
Preceding her in death were her parents Carl and Ann Stewart; sister Sue Alice Stewart (infant); grandson Justin Ray Pitchford (infant) and son-in-law Jim Johnson.
Ann is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Tom Pitchford of Victoria. Her nine children include Helen Sue Johnson of Victoria; Tom Jr. (Gayla) Pitchford of Inez; Linda Kay Pitchford of Fort Worth; David (Christy) Pitchford of El Paso; Norma Ann Pitchford (Jesse Cano) of Victoria; Eddy (Cathy) Pitchford of Coahoma; Joyce (Kenny) Townsend of San Antonio; Jimmy (Alisa) Pitchford of Ennis and Bobby (Kris) Pitchford of Jacksonville, N.C. She is also the proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and eight great-step-grandchildren. Her brother is William Carl Stewart of Pascagoula, Miss.
Family and friend visitation is scheduled for Wednesday night at Oaklawn Funeral Home, 900 Navidad, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in Red Bluff Cemetery in Lolita, Texas.
