Charles David ‘Smitty’ Smith

Charles David “Smitty” Smith, 75, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Weatherford.

Service is 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeff Griffin officiating. Visitation is 6-7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.

He was born Dec. 20, 1937, to Merlin Morris and Emma Dixon Smith in Kilgore. Charles was a longtime resident of Parker County. He served as a reserve deputy for the Parker County Sheriff’s Office. He was instrumental in getting the first paid county fire department in the state and served as fire marshall and fire chief of Parker County. Charles owned and operated Smitty’s Equipment and Rental for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Bess Smith, of Weatherford; sons, Virgil Summers and wife, Maureen, of Poolville, Charles W. Smith and wife, Gail, of Weatherford, and Stoney Smith and wife, Pamela, of Toulouse, France; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Merle Phillips and husband, Dr. Carroll, of Houston; numerous nieces, nephews; and a host of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Merlin and Emma Smith; and a brother, Robert Morris Smith.
