Let gun dealers issue permits

Dear Editor,

It seems likely that buying a gun will require a universal background check.

Requiring an individual to conduct a background on another could be a bureaucratic nightmare.

I suggest that the existing network of gun dealers could be used to conduct background checks for individuals. A person could go to a participating dealer, fill out the necessary forms and have a digital photograph taken. Upon passing the background check a card could be issued to that person.

The card would have a photograph, necessary personal information, a serial number, expiration date and a statement that this person is authorized to buy guns, ammunition, accessories, etc. The seller would compare person to photograph and, if there is a match, complete the sale. Since there is no legitimate reason for the government to know who owns what the seller would not be required to keep a record of the sale.

There must be no fee for this service anymore than there is a fee for voter registration. Both the right to vote and the right to keep and bear arms are fundamental to a free society.

What’s happening to our country?

Dear Editor,

On the front page of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Monday, Feb. 4, was an article, “Obama Says The Boy Scouts Should Allow Gay Members.”

Obama also says that he is a Christian. If he is a Christian, maybe he should read the Bible, and find out what the Bible reads about Homosexuals, or gays. Genesis 2:21-23 reads about how God made man, then took a rib from man and made woman. Not another man, but a woman. Or maybe Obama should read Leviticus 18:22-23, 20-13.

I feel this is a disgrace to our country. If I had a son in Boy Scouts I would be very upset to even think this would even thought about, and I would not let him stay in Boy Scouts. It was bad enough when Obama was on television stating that he approved of same sex marriages. Religious or civic groups are not the same and should not be looked on as the same.

Homosexuality is an abomination to God. In Leviticus 20:13 it reads if a man also lies with a man, as he also lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death, their blood shall be upon them.

To me this is a horrible thing for the president of our country to even think about. I am fed up with what is happening to our country. We the people of the United States need to let our president know how we feel about what he is doing to our country.

Article put a face on drug abuse

Dear Editor,

The Democrat has done a service to our community with last Sunday’s article, “Deadly Dope,” written by Christin Coyne.

Coyne succeeded in putting a human face on the issue of drug abuse, and has helped alert parents and students to the seriousness of the issue.

Not only have I seen lives lost, families shattered and bright futures destroyed but I see the toll it has taken on our communities – loss of productivity, increase in crime, strain on social programs, etc.

My hope and prayer is that those who read this article will take seriously the message it contains, that substance abuse is a destroyer.

Karen Byrum, Aledo

  • CNHI EDITORIAL: Seizure of AP phone records an insult to independent press

Distrust of government secrecy has been elevated to an exceptional level with the disclosure the Justice Department covertly examined two months of Associated Press phone records to determine who leaked details to the AP about a foiled terrorist plot.

This famous quote addressing communication failure is a classic line from the 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Paul Newman. Strother Martin, who played the role of the warden in a southern prison, would use this phrase every time he gave Luke a good whack with his baton. The concept resonated so well with moviegoers that it was voted No. 11 of the 100 all-time favorite movie quotes according to the American Film Institute.

You don’t often see “woe” used in an article. It’s a word that has fallen out of usage in our day. But it’s a word that ought to be understood and taken seriously.

I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to the slobs, idiots and inconsiderate people who continually decorate the beautiful Texas landscape with their trash. I guess it’s really a form of art with beer bottles and cans, boxes, plastic drink containers, food packaging and just about anything else you can think of. It just doesn’t appeal to me. Thank you.

I had never really considered this possibility, but every one of the Three Little Pigs was almost certainly a guy. I know that assumption is not particularly popular from an equal opportunity standpoint, but the fact is fairly certain. How do I know? They all three had hair on their chinny chin chins.
