COLUMN: Veteran's Corner

— August marks the third anniversary of the Post 9/11 GI Bill and since it was implemented Aug. 1, 2009, the VA has provided educational benefits to 773,000 veterans and their family members.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill pays tuition and fees on behalf of veterans or eligible dependents directly to the school in which they are enrolled. Eligible participants also receive a monthly housing allowance and up to $1,000 annually for books and supplies. The program also allows eligible service members to transfer their benefits to their spouses and/or children.

The program provides a wide range of educational options, including undergraduate and graduate degrees. Training is also available in areas of vocation/technical, on the job, flight, correspondence, licensing, entrepreneurship and tutorial assistance. All training programs must be approved for GI Bill benefits.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is the most extensive educational assistance program since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944.Since its inception, the VA has paid more than $20 billion in benefits to veterans and their family members.

For the 2012-2013 academic year, 1,770 colleges and universities are supplementing Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits by participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program. Under the Yellow Ribbon Program, degree granting institutions make additional funds available for a veteran’s educational program without an additional change to their GI Bill entitlement. To make up the difference to those students whose tuition and fees exceed what the Post 9/11 GI Bill covers, institutions can voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon agreement with the VA, to designate an additional amount of funding and the VA will match that amount.

Remember to be aware of deceptive and misleading promotional efforts that target GI Bill benefactors. If you feel that misinformation is being portrayed, contact the VA at www.gibill.va.gov or contact a state veterans representative for help. Fall semester is upon us. Don’t delay your pursuit of an education.

A great deal of thanks is extended to Mrs. Norma Hall and Mrs. Patty Hutto, Palo Pinto Lake residents. AMVETS Post 133 was contacted by Mrs. Hall last month indicating that the two households would like to donate clothing from their deceased military veteran husbands. These items were picked up and will benefit those that are in need of help. Don Hutto was an Air Force veteran and Robert Hall a Army veteran. Sgt. Hall was also a Korean War POW from December 1950 until August 1953. AMVETS salutes these two men that served and sacrificed for our country and will remain close to Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Hutto, ensuring that help is just a phone call away.

God Bless the Hall and Hutto families.

Speak to you again next week.

This famous quote addressing communication failure is a classic line from the 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Paul Newman. Strother Martin, who played the role of the warden in a southern prison, would use this phrase every time he gave Luke a good whack with his baton. The concept resonated so well with moviegoers that it was voted No. 11 of the 100 all-time favorite movie quotes according to the American Film Institute.

You don’t often see “woe” used in an article. It’s a word that has fallen out of usage in our day. But it’s a word that ought to be understood and taken seriously.

  • Letters to the Editor – May 15, 2013

I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to the slobs, idiots and inconsiderate people who continually decorate the beautiful Texas landscape with their trash. I guess it’s really a form of art with beer bottles and cans, boxes, plastic drink containers, food packaging and just about anything else you can think of. It just doesn’t appeal to me. Thank you.

I had never really considered this possibility, but every one of the Three Little Pigs was almost certainly a guy. I know that assumption is not particularly popular from an equal opportunity standpoint, but the fact is fairly certain. How do I know? They all three had hair on their chinny chin chins.
